Queensland Kauri ]is a member of the Araucariaceae family. These trees are highly valued for their timber, which is used in construction, furniture making, and boat building due to its strength and durability. They are also planted as ornamental trees in parks and large gardens for their majestic appearance and shade. It has large, leathery, lance-shaped leaves that are dark green and glossy. The leaves are typically 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 cm) long and arranged in opposite pairs. The bark is grayish-brown, smooth on young trees, becoming rough and flaky with age, often shedding in irregular plates. They are gymnosperms, meaning they do not produce flowers in the traditional sense. Instead, they produce male and female cones. The male cones are small and cylindrical, while the female cones are larger, woody, and can take over a year to mature.

Origin: a native to Queensland, Australia, specifically found in the rainforests of northeastern Queensland.

Queensland Kauris produce an edible pine fruit that has an acidic, pineapple-mango taste.
The cones can be quite large, measuring up to 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter, and take more than a year to mature. Once mature, the cones release winged seeds that are dispersed by the wind.

Maintenance:

Soil and Light: Queensland Kauri trees prefer well-drained, fertile soils and can tolerate a range of soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils. They thrive in full sun to partial shade, with optimal growth occurring in humid, tropical to subtropical climates.

Watering: Regular watering is essential for young trees to establish roots. Once established, they are relatively drought-tolerant but will benefit from consistent moisture, especially during dry periods.

Pruning: Prune the tree as needed to remove dead or damaged branches and to maintain a desirable shape. Minimal pruning is usually required due to the tree’s natural growth habit.

Pests and Diseases: Queensland Kauri trees are generally resistant to pests and diseases but can occasionally be affected by root rot in poorly drained soils. Regular monitoring and proper cultural practices can help prevent these issues.

Origin: South America

Maintenance: Jacarandas should be shielded from strong wind. They are mostly tolerant to drought, however they do benefit from regular watering during summer.

Does it Bear Fruit: Jacaranda trees are poisonous and none of the tree, including its fruit, should be consumed.

“The Jacaranda symbolizes wisdom and good fortune. Native to South America, it was appropriately given the name “jacaranda” which means fragr ant in the Guarani language. The purple bell – shaped flowers that form in dense terminal clusters bloom during the late summer, attracting birds and bees. The Jacaranda’s twice pinnately green leaves turn a brilliant yellow in the autumn, providing onlooker s with beauty throughout the year. “
